OK Google, help me sleep better? The new Nest Hub smart display has built-in tech to help
The newest version of Google's Nest Hub promises better sound – and better sleep. But consumers having trouble sleeping may be more drawn to its new built-in Sleep Sensing technology that uses Google's Soli motion detection chip – first used in the Pixel 4 smartphone – to know how long you slept. The Soli-driven radar does not identify specific bodies or faces, but will watch your movements and breathing, as well as track when you snore or cough to build a pattern of your sleep – and what could be interrupting it. Facebook's vaccine finder:The new tool can help you book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment Google's consumer research found about 20% of Nest Hub displays owned by consumers are in bedrooms. "When we talked to people about what they most wanted help with, they resoundingly responded with'Can you help me get better quality of sleep?' That's what people were really interested in," Ashton Udall, senior Nest product manager, told USA TODAY.
Vivo Announces New TOF 3D Sensing Technology That Will Rival Apple's Face ID
Chinese phone maker Vivo has announced its own 3D sensing technology that could rival Apple's Face ID facial recognition feature. Vivo claims that its technology will have 10 times more sensor points than Apple's solution. "Vivo's TOF 3D Sensing Technology features industry-leading performance in depth of information captured with its 300,000 sensor points, which is 10 times the number of existing Structured Light Technology. This raises the bar by enabling 3D mapping at up to three meters from the phone while having a smaller baseline than Structured Light," Vivo said in a press release. "TOF 3D Sensing Technology is also simpler and smaller in structure and allows for more flexibility when embedded in a smartphone. This will enable much broader application of this technology than was previously possible."
Apple iPhone X 3D Sensing Technology To Be Adopted By Rival Companies
With the strong demand for iPhone X, a Taiwanese supplier is predicting that the Cupertino giant's rivals will also adopt the 3D sensing technology Apple used on the 10th anniversary iPhone to their flagship handsets. The supplier is even predicting a rise in the demand for 3D sensing modules in the next 5 to 8 years. On Tuesday, DigiTimes reported that the chairman and CEO of digital camera and imaging solution supplier Altek, Alex Hsia, is expecting strong demand for 3D sensing modules in the following years now that Apple has introduced Face ID with its iPhone X flagship phone. "The structure-light 3D sensing technology adopted by Apple's iPhone X features high accuracy at short distances, and other first-tier smartphone vendors are expected to follow suit by launching 3D sensing-enabled devices," Hsia said. The CEO predicts that consumers will see more smartphones with 3D sensing technology starting next year.
